edible fingerpaint
This weekend, we made edible fingerpaint on a cloudy Saturday morning. Rowan has a lovely habit of eating his crayons (and dirt and rocks!), so making a safe, ingestible fingerpaint sounded like a good project for us. I have experimented with making play dough before which worked out really well. Rowan still plays with the same batch from months ago, and when he eats it, I don’t have to go into a tailspin.
Here is the recipe I found on Momtastic (great website btw). It was a lot of fun and very messy. I guess that means we were doing it right.
Edible Fingerpaint

1/3 cup flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups of water
Food coloring
In saucepan, on low/medium heat, warm up flour, sugar, salt and water. Wisk until mixture thickens and is a smooth consistency.
Divide mixture evenly into 4 small cups. Stir in a few drops of food coloring in each cup and mix until desired color is reached. I found adding more food coloring and making the colors darker made for a better paint on paper.
Brilliant! I love it! Just for the simple fact that it is cheaper and environmentally better! woohoo. I need to visit that lady's site also, you've mentioned her a few times, I just hate to get addicted to MORE blogs. 🙂

My 5 and 6 year olds still love to fingerpaint but thankfully they don't eat the paint. They do paint masterpieces though and I can entertain them for hours with a few pieces of paper and some fresh water colors. I love seeing what they create! 🙂

Oh I need this so. My oldest wouldn't dare put anything in his mouth if I looked at him sideways…#2 is a TOTALLY different story. A couple of days ago, she had decorated herself with a marker in the 1 minute I had turned my back on her to help my son with something. When I called her on it, she stuck the marker in her mouth and started sucking on it!!! Yup. Gray hairs are popping out. I haven't been pulling out the finger paints with her, but now I will. Pictures to come because I am SURE there will be more on her than the paper!
OMG, that story is too much! It makes me feel better though, like I am not the only one!
I've been needing something to do with my little ones while the big ones are in school they just started. This would be a perfect activity for them. I love it!
What a cute idea!! My kids are a bit older, but I think my 7 year old would love to try this, and I know my nephews, 3 and 1 would really love to do this. Thanks for such a fun idea!!

how is it for clean up? my husband is concerned about the food coloring staining anything and everything it gets on?
We definitely played in clothes that we didn't mind getting dirty and I moved his play table outside. Though nothing got ruined everything washed out. It is a very watery mixture so It is not as potent straight food coloring.
Lisa this recipe rocks. I am saving this and can't wait to use it when the kids are old enough in a few months to start "doing something".
