natural cold and flu remedy: elderberry syrup

It was a super rainy afternoon, so I got Rowan in the kitchen, and we made Elderberry Syrup. This recipe was really easy, and Rowan was able to help with the measuring and pouring.
My good friend and herbalist, Renee Dixon gave us this recipe to me last winter when we were all getting colds. I know we are bound to get hit a few times this season, so I am excited to have this on hand. Oh, and it tastes delicious. Rowan easily took a teaspoon.

Also, find some good info on the benefits of Elderberry for colds and flu here.

Elderberry Syrup

1 cup fresh or 1/2 cup dried Elderberry
5 cloves
1 tablespoon grated ginger
1 cinnamon stick
2 cups of water
1 cup honey

Add Elderberries, cloves, ginger, cinnamon stick and water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Turn down heat and simmer until reduced by 1/2 for about 20-30 minutes. Pour mixture through a strainer into a medium bowl. Add honey and stir to combine. Store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.

Try Rainbow Breathing! Taking deep breaths when feelings get overwhelming is a practice that can be invaluable for all of us. When kids are feeling anxious or stressed this practice can help them find calm and regulate their nervous feelings. Using fun modalities like this Rainbow Breathing tool, can be a good way to introduce this practice to young people in a fun way that won’t make the practice seem too intimidating.
