Feelings are like waves

“Feelings are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming, but we can choose which one to surf”
— Jonatan Mårtensson

When I read the quote by Jonatan Martensson, I was inspired. When children can visualize a concept, it can sink in. Visualizing waves is a way to show children that your feelings are natural, but they are not permanent so even the big, strong feelings will come and go. Understanding that feelings come and go is an essential part of emotional intelligence and well-being. I created this little foldout card with feelings faces, to help illustrate the message.
It’s important to remember that experiencing a range of emotions is a normal part of being human. Just as we feel joy, love, and contentment, we also experience sadness, anger, and fear. Embracing this emotional spectrum allows us to appreciate the richness of life and the depth of our own experiences.
When kids find themselves in the grips of big feelings, we can gently remind them that feelings are like waves. Bring out art supplies and kids can draw waves or create a wave cut out like the one I created here. I tend to lean on art and creativity when big feelings arise, and always find that it is a wonderful way to flow through feelings.

“Whatever comes, don’t push it away. When it goes, do not grieve.Feelings are just visitors, let them come and go. If you make human company too important you will not discover your true self.”

It is fun to have a few crafts in your arsenal to help kids when big feelings rear their head. I have a small library of printables that can be an easy resource for a social emotional learning corner or to pull out on a plane ride or during quiet time.
